Cultural Sensitivity
Some histories require care in how, and whether, they are published.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories
We acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the lands where these memorials stand. Content relating to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, places or events is published only with appropriate community or family consent, and cultural protocols take precedence over completeness.
Images and names of people who have died
Some communities and families ask that images or names of people who have died are not displayed, or are shown with a warning. We honour such requests, and pages can carry an advisory notice where one is appropriate.
Distressing content
Where a story involves violence, conflict or loss of life, it is written factually and without unnecessary detail, with a notice where readers would reasonably expect one.
Historical language
Quoted inscriptions and records are reproduced accurately, including outdated or offensive wording, with context explaining that the language is historical and not ours.
Requesting a change
Families, communities and cultural organisations can ask for content to be adjusted, restricted or removed through the contact page. Requests are treated seriously and considered promptly.
